The Gospel of St Matthew
This is the book of the generation of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son also of Abraham.

Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of which was born that Jesus, that is called Christ.
All the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations. And from David unto the captivity of Babylon are fourteen generations. And from the captivity of Babylon unto Christ, are also fourteen generations.
The birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise. When his mother Mary was married to Joseph, before they came to dwell together, she was found with child by the holy ghost. Then Joseph her husband being a perfect man, and *loth (unwilling) to make an example of her, was minded to put her away secretly. While he thus thought, behold the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying: Joseph the son of David, fear not to take unto you Mary your wife. For that which is conceived in her is of the holy ghost. She shall bring forth a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. For he shall save his people from their sins.
All this was done to fulfil that which was spoken of the Lord by the Prophet, saying: Behold a maid shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and you shall call his name Emanuel, which is by interpretation, God with us.
And Joseph, as soon as he awoke out of sleep, did as the angel of the Lord bade him, and took his wife unto him, and knew her not till she had brought forth her first son, and called his name Jesus.
The 2nd Chapter
When Jesus was born at Bethlehem in Jury (Jewry), in the time of Herod the king. Behold, there came wise men from the East to Jerusalem saying: Where is he that is born king of the Jews? We have seen his star in the East, and are come to worship him.
When Herod the king had heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him, and he gathered all the chief Priests and Scribes of the people, and asked of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him: at Bethlehem in Jewry. For thus it is written by the Prophet. And you Bethlehem in the land of Jewry, are not the least concerning the Princes of Juda. For out of you shall come the captain, that shall govern my people Israel.
Then Herod privily called the wise men, and diligently enquired of them, the time of the star that appeared, and sent them to Bethlehem saying: Go and search diligently for the child. And when you have found him, bring me word, that I may come and worship him also.
When they had heard the king, they departed: and lo the star which they saw in the East, went before them, till it came and stood over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were marvellously glad: and went into the house, and found the child with Mary his mother, and kneeled down and worshipped him, and opened their treasures, and offered unto him gifts, gold, frankincense and myrrh. And after they were warned of God in a dream, that they should not go again to Herod, they returned into their own country another way.
When they were departed: behold the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in dream saying: arise, and take the child and his mother, and fly into Egypt, and abide there till I bring you word. For Herod will seek the child to destroy him. Then he arose, and took the child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt, and was there unto the death of Herod, to fulfil that which was spoken of the Lord, by the Prophet which says, out of Egypt have I called my son.
Then Herod perceiving that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, as many as were two year old and under, according to the time which he had diligently searched out of the wise men.
Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by the Prophet Jeremy saying: On the hills was a voice heard, mourning, weeping, and great lamentation: Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they were not.
When Herod was dead: behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt saying: arise and take the child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel. For they are dead which sought the childs life. Then he arose up, and took the child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Jewry, in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go over there. Notwithstanding after he was warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee, and went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, to fulfil that which was spoken by the Prophets: he shall be called a Nazarite.
The 3rd Chapter
In those days John the Baptist came and preached in the wilderness of Jewry, saying: Repent, the kingdom of heaven is at hand. This is he of whom it is spoken by the Prophet Esai, which says: The voice of a crier in wilderness, prepare the Lords way, and make his paths straight. This John had his garment of camels hair, and a girdle of a skin about his loins. His meat was locusts and wild honey. Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Jewry, and all the region round about Jordan, and were baptised of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
When he saw many of the Pharisees and of the Saduces come to his baptism, he said unto them: O' generation of vipers, who has taught you to flee from the vengeance to come? Bring forth therefore the fruits belonging to repentance. And see that you once think not to say in yourselves, we have Abraham to our father. For I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. Even now is the axe put unto the root of the trees: so that every tree which brings not forth good fruit, is hewn down and cast into the fire.
I baptise you in water in token of repentance: but he that comes after me, is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear. He shall baptise you with the holy ghost and with fire: which has also his fan in his hand, and will purge his flour, and gather the wheat into his garner, and will burn the chaff with unquencheable fire.
Then came Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John to be baptised of him. But John forbade him, saying: I ought to be baptised of you: and come you to me? Jesus answered and said to him. Let it be so now. For thus it becomes us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he *suffered (allowed) him. And Jesus as soon as he was baptised, came straight out of the water. And lo heaven was open over him: and John saw the spirit of God descend like a dove, and light upon him. And lo there came a voice from heaven saying: This is that my beloved son in whom is my delight.
The 4th Chapter
Then was Jesus led away of the spirit into wilderness, to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungered. Then came to him the tempter, and said: if you be the son of God, command that these stones be made bread. He answered and said: it is written, man shall not live by bread only, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. Then the devil took him up into the holy city, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him: if you be the son of God, cast yourself down. For it is written, he shall give his angels charge over you, and with their hands they shall hold you up, that you dash not your foot against a stone. And Jesus said to him, it is written also: You shall not tempt your Lord God.

The devil took him up again and led him in to an exceeding high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and all the glory of them, and said to him: all these will I give you, if you will fall down and worship me. Then said Jesus unto him. Avoid, Satan. For it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.
Then the devil left him, and behold, the angels came and ministered unto him.
When Jesus had heard that John was taken, he departed into Galilee and left Nazareth, and went and dwelt in Capernaum, which is a city upon the sea, in the coasts of zabulon and Nephthalim, to fulfil that which was spoken by Esai the Prophet, saying: The land of Zabulon and Nephthalim, the way of the sea beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people which sat in darkness, saw great light, and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death, light is begun to shine.
From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say: repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
As Jesus walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brethren: Simon which was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishers, and he said unto them, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
And he went forth from that place, and saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and called them. And they without tarrying left the ship and their father and followed him.
And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healed all manner of sickness, and all manner diseases among the people. And his fame spread abroad throughout all Syria. And they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and gripings, and them that were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy: and he healed them. And there followed him a great number of people, from Galilee, and from the ten cities, and from Jerusalem, and from Jewry, and from the regions that lie beyond Jordan.
The 5th Chapter
When he saw the people he went up into a mountain, and when he was set, his disciples came to him, and he opened his mouth, and taught them saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which hunger and thirst for righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which suffer persecution for righteousness sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when men revile you, and persecute you, and shall falsely say all manner of evil sayings against you for my sake. Rejoice, and be glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For so persecuted they the Prophets which were before your days.
You are the salt of the earth: but and if the salt have lost her saltiness, what can be salted therewith? It is from that time good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. you are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill, cannot be hid, neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick, and it lights all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your father which is in heaven.
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the Prophets: no I am not come to destroy them, but to fulfil them. For truly I say unto you, till heaven and earth perish, one jot or one tittle of the law shall not scape, till all be fulfilled.
Whosoever breaks one of these least commandments, and teaches men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But whosoever observes and teaches, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
For I say unto you, except your righteousness exceed, the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees, you cannot enter into the kingdom of heaven.
You have heard how it was said unto them of the old time: You shall not kill. For whosoever kills, shall be in danger of judgement. But I say unto you, whosoever is angry with his brother, shall be in danger of judgement. Whosoever says unto his brother Raca, shall be in danger of a council. But whosoever says you fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. Raca: worthless: from the Hebrew
Therefore when you offer your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you: leave there your offering before the altar, and go your way first and be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
Agree with your adversary quickly, whiles you are in the way with him, least that adversary deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the minister, and then you be cast into prison. Verily I say unto you: you shall not come out from that place, till you have paid the utmost *farthing. *farthing 1/4 penny from the English
You have heard how it was said to them of old time: You shall not commit *advoutry. But I say unto you, that whosoever looks on a wife, lusting after her, has committed advoutry with her already in his heart. *advoutry: prefix "a" meaning not or without, devout: devotion; plain hearted to God, being devoted to something or some one else. see James 2 for adultery
Wherefore if your right eye offend you, pluck him out, and cast him from you. Better it is for you that one of your members perish, than that your whole body should be cast into hell. Also if your right hand offend you, cut him off and cast him from you. Better it is that one of your members perish, than that all your body should be cast into hell.
It is said, whosoever put away his wife, let him give her a testimonial also of the divorcement. But I say unto you: whosoever put away his wife, (except it be for fornication) causes her to break matrimony. And whosoever marries her that is divorced, breaks wedlock.
Again you have heard how it was said to them of old time, you shall not forswear yourself, but shall perform your oath to God. But I say unto you, swear not at all: neither by heaven, for it is Gods seat: nor yet by the earth, for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem, for it is the city of that great king: neither shall you swear by your head, because you can not make one white hair, or black: But your communication shall be, yes, yes: no, no. For whatsoever is more than that, comes of evil.
You have heard how it is said, an eye for an eye: a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, that you resist not wrong. But whosoever give you a blow on your right cheek, turn to him the other. And if any man will sue you at the law, and take away your coat, let him have your cloak also. And whosoever will compel you to go a mile, go with him twain (two). Give to him that asks, and from him that would borrow turn not away.
You have heard how it is said: you shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy. But I say unto you, love your enemies. Bless them that curse you. Do good to them that hate you. Pray for them which do you wrong and persecute you, that you may be the children of your father that is in heaven: for he makes his sun to arise on the evil, and on the good, and sends his rain on the just and unjust. For if you love them, which love you: what reward shall you have? Do not the *Publicans even so? And if you be friendly to your brethren only: what singular thing do ye? Do not the Publicans likewise? you shall therefore be perfect, even as your father which is in heaven, is perfect. *Publicans: collector of taxes or tribute from the public.
The 6th Chapter
Take heed to your alms, that you give it not in the sight of men, to the intent that you would be seen of them. Or else you get no reward of your father which is in heaven. Whensoever therefore you give your alms, you shall not make a trumpet to be blown before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, for to be praised of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. But when you do your alms, let not your left hand know, what your right hand doth, that your alms may be secret: and your father which sees in secret, shall reward you openly.
And when you prayest, you shall not be as the hypocrites are. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues, and in the corners of the streets, because they would be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. But when you prayest, enter into your chamber, and shut your door to you, and pray to your father which is in secret: and your father which sees in secret, shall reward you openly.
And when you pray, babble not much, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard, for their much babblings sake. Be you not like them therefore. For your father knows whereof you have need, before you ask of him. After this manner therefore pray ye.
O' our father which are in heaven, hallowed be your name. Let your kingdom come. your will be fulfilled, as well in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, even as we forgive our trespassers. And lead us not into temptation: but deliver us from evil. For your is the kingdom and the power, and the glory for ever. Amen. For and if you shall forgive other men their trespasses, your heavenly father shall also forgive you. But and you will not forgive men their trespasses, no more shall your father forgive your trespasses.
Moreover when you fast, be not sad as the hypocrites are. For they disfigure their faces, that they might be seen of men how they fast. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. But you, when you fastest, anoint your head, and wash your face, that it appear not unto men how that you fastest: but unto your father which is in secret: and your father which sees in secret, shall reward you openly.
See that you gather you not treasure upon the earth, where rust and m corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. But gather you treasures to gether in heaven, where neither rust nor moths corrupt, and where thieves neither break up nor yet steal. For where soever your treasure is, there will your hearts be also.
The light of the body is your eye. Wherefore if your eye be single, all body shall be full of light. But and if your eye be wicked then all your body shall be full of darkness. Wherefore if the light that is in you, be darkness: how great is that darkness.
No man can serve two masters. For either he shall hate the one and love other: or else he shall lean to the one and despise the other: you cannot serve God and *Mammon. Therefore I say unto you, be not *careful for your life, what shall eat, or what you shall drink, nor yet for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more worth than meat, and the body more of value then raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither reap, nor yet carry the barns: and yet your heavenly father feeds them. Are you not much better than they? *Mammon: to serve for gain. *careful: that is full of care.
Which of you (though he took thought therefore) could put one cubit unto his stature? And why care you then for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They labor not neither spin. And yet for all that I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his royalty was not arrayed like unto one these. Wherefore if God so clothe the grass, which is today in the field, and tomorrow shall be cast into the furnace, shall he not much more do the same unto you, O' you of little faith?
Therefore take no thought saying: what shall we eat, or what shall we drink, or wherewith shall we be clothed? After all these things seek the gentiles. For your heavenly father knows that you have need of all these things. But rather seek you first the kingdom of heaven and the righteousness thereof, and all these things shall be ministered unto you.
Care not then for the morrow, but let the morrow care for itself: for the day present has ever enough of his own travail.
